On a beautiful sunny evening with hardly any breeze, the 10.15 ferry to Belmont was being rocked from side to side with the celebrations of a victorious Unst team and their merry band of supporters.

An exceptionally large and vociferous crowd turned out to watch the North Isles derby encounter between 2 sides who were playing for more than 3 points; the pride of an island, the hopes and dreams of their supporters, the opportunity to become a Hilltop/Back Bar legend, were all at stake. And it was Unst who rose to the challenge, fulfilled all expectations and put on a show to enthral the supporters in the away end of the ground.

Having already acquired 3 points from Scalloway, Yell started the game full of confidence and with a strong squad who believed this was their best chance to take points off their fiercest northern rivals. Though, as the game transpired, Unst had no intention of making it an easy game for the home side.

The game started at a blistering pace with Unst pressing from the first whistle and what followed was an impressive display of speed, skill and determination from an Unst team out to prove they're more accomplished than their league position has shown.

Over Zealous Linesman

The first half saw some tasty tackling from both teams and a battle ensued in midfield which would eventually take its toll on the Yell players who couldn't maintain their work-rate for the full 90 minutes. Few clear cut chances were created early on from either team though an over-zealous home linesman made sure any ball round the back of the Yell defence was flagged for offside, and at times, it seemed the supporters could hang their coats on his permanently outstretched right arm. Some of these decisions were met with derision from the away fans and the referee, on occasion, turned a blind-eye to the more obvious errors from the touchline official.

Unst were the team to make the breakthrough in a period of play which saw Unst whip several balls into the box. Though the delivery at times was sometimes excessive, one opportunity was seized upon by David MacMillan who managed to bundle the ball over the line with his chest.

The half came to a close just as Unst were beginning to take over the midfield, with Paul Henderson and (the talented) David Thomson making their presence felt and beginning to surpass their counterparts in the Yell engine room.

The second half started similarly to the first, at breathtaking speed, and instantly it became apparent that the Yell team didn't have the legs to play for another 45 minutes. Henderson and Thomson in the middle of the park started dictating the play and opened up the home team on several occasions.

Impressive runs from the flanks by Jordan Johnson and Iain Johnson saw Unst play some excellent football and they capitalised several times through midfielders breaking forward.

Hat Trick Hero

David Thomson was on the scoresheet soon into the half and completed an impressive hat-trick with some scintillating play which outfoxed the Yell defenders on many occasions. Yell had now resorted to putting in hefty challenges rather than playing football and a number of the home players had to be spoken to by the referee regarding their tactics which did resemble several sports, though none of them football.

Thomson's first goal was at the end of an excellent move which involved most of the Unst team at some point. Henderson broke through into the box before a neat cut back to Thomson who coolly slotted home. His second goal was one of beauty; a blistering 25 yarder nestling in the top left corner of the goal, which put the away fans into raptures and totally deflated the home side.

With all the furore over the home linesman's decisions, the irony wasn't lost on the away fans, when the fourth goal went in with more than a just a whiff of offside. David Thomson's scuffed strike rumbling into the bottom corner with Matthew Mouat trying to get on the end of it being a clean 2 yards offside. Although the goal was debated long into the night, Thomson claimed it and soared to the top of the Unst F.C. top scorer league.

Wooooofffffff!

The dying minutes saw Unst have several more chances, the most notable of which being a Jordan Johnson curling ball which was met by Martin "Archie" McPherson who connected sweetly only to see the ball motor inches wide of the goal. A chance that his namesake would most likely follow up with a "wooooofffffff"!

The game concluded with the dejected Yell players trudging off and the away fans rumbling onto the park to celebrate with their triumphant players and coaching staff. A magnificent performance and result for Unst F.C. and one that will be remembered for the days and weeks to come - or at least until August when both teams square up and do it all over again...
